The first double edged razor is believed to have been invented in the late 18th century by a Frenchman named Jean-Jacques Perret, and a similar model was also made in Sheffield, England in the 1820's. In 1901, US inventors King Camp Gillette and William Nickerson invented a razor with disposable blades. These became known as safety razors with their disposable blades held safely in the razors handle.
In 1965 Wilkinson Sword created the stainless steel razor blade and jumped ahead of Gillette in the market. These blades were far superior to the easily rusting carbon steel blades and Gillette then had to follow suit.
Safety razors began to be phased out in the early 1970s with the introduction of the plastic disposable razor blade cartridge. Gillette then brought out its first double edged blade in cartridge form. Meanwhile, Bic entered the market in 1974 with a fully disposable model and the whole razor was thrown away once the blade became blunt.
At the turn of the millennium, Gillette introduced the triple blade cartridge, sparking the blade wars between the two major brands, to bring out the razor with the most blades: hence the Schick Quattro and the five blade Gillette Fusion.
To counter act the crazy number of blades and the high cost of razor upgrades we created a series of safety razors here in New Zealand to help kiwis discover the classic art of wet shaving. Today we sell some of the globes top brands of razors to suit everyones budget.
